Frequently Asked Questions
How did the Raptors win this year's NBA championship?
DeMar DeRozan was traded to Toronto Raptors by Jakob Poltl (protected 2019 first-round draft pick) and a Toronto Raptors player in return for Kawhi Leonard.
On February 7, 2019, the Raptors traded Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright C. J. Miles, and a 2024 draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies were traded to Marc Gasol (another multiple All-Star player and former Defensive Player-of-the-Year) and Jeremy Lin shortly thereafter.
The Toronto Raptors' offseason was very exciting. They made two huge trades that caused shockwaves throughout the NBA. DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, as well as a 2019 draft pick (that was secured) were the first trades made by the Raptors. In exchange, they got Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green (Spurs). They traded Jonas Valanciunas and Delon Wright C. J. Miles and a 2024 second-round pick were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Marc Gasol, another multiple All-Star and former Defensive player of the year. These moves put the Raptors in a great position to compete for an NBA title this season. Let's have a closer look at each trade.
Kawhi Leonard's trade to the Raptors was risky but a good move. Leonard is a top-5 pick in the league, when healthy, and just finished an MVP-caliber campaign. But, injury limited Leonard to just 9 games last season, and there are doubts about his long term health. However, the Raptors decided that the reward was worth the risk and pulled the trigger on the deal. Leonard has been playing at an All Star level and is currently in good health. He's averaging 26 points per game, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and shoots 49% from the floor and 38% from three point range. If he is healthy, the Raptors have a chance to win the NBA title this season.
Marc Gasol made a trade for Marc Gasol, but it was a very short-term one. Gasol, who is in his mid-30s, is clearly past his prime. Yet, he is still a solid player who can bring valuable experience to a young Raptors roster. He is averaging 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while shooting 45% from the field and 34% from three-point range. C.J. and Delon Wright, two of their young players, were traded by the Raptors. Miles was used to acquire Gasol but the Raptors believe his experience will prove valuable in the playoffs.
The Raptors were off to a good start with a winning 6-0 record. Their 16th win was on November 23rd. To prevent Leonard's injury from getting worse, the Raptors rested him for 20 more games. They managed to win the 2nd East seed. This was only two points behind the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Raptors were able to continue their winning streak in the playoffs by defeating the Philadelphia 76ers (Orlando Magic), Milwaukee Bucks (Milwaukee Bucks) to reach the NBA Finals. Leonard was named Finals Champion and the Raptors took home their first title.
The Toronto Raptors had a great offseason. The Raptors are well-positioned to be contenders over the next few years, with two All-Stars. They have proven they can take risks and make bold moves when it comes down to building a championship-caliber team. It will be interesting for the future to see how they maintain their success.
Vancouver ever had a team in the NBA?
Vancouver does NOT have a NBA team. The Vancouver Grizzlies played in Vancouver from 1995-2001. The team relocated to Memphis Tennessee in 2001. Now, basketball enthusiasts in Vancouver support the Toronto Raptors as they are the closest NBA team to the area. The Greater Vancouver Area also hosts professional basketball teams, such as Vancouver Volcanoes and the Canadian Elite Basketball League's BC Tigers. A number of amateur and semiprofessional teams participate in various local leagues.
Vancouver offers many recreational options for fans to enjoy their favorite sport, aside from basketball. Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association aims for former players to get together and promote basketball in British Columbia. It hosts clinics and viewing parties at Raptors games.
The city's enthusiasm for basketball has not diminished following the departure from the Grizzlies. This community continues to support the sport through many different ways. Vancouverites are still passionate about basketball and continue to support the many initiatives of former players and other organizations that promote basketball in the city.
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
Because of a dispute with Vancouver's City Council over arena financing, NBA had to leave Vancouver. The City had planned to contribute $40 million toward the construction of a new basketball arena. It would have 12 luxury suites, two restaurants and a bar. However, the City Council wanted $60 million in taxpayer money for the team owners to pay off their existing debt. This meant the city would have to borrow $200 million to build the arena, while the team owners only had to pay back $20 million in debt. The city would have to pay the remainder of the loan back.
The City Council indicated that they would approve the plan if Rogers Arena was allowed to remain until the new facility is opened. But the league refused to agree, saying the arena wasn't big enough for them anymore. They couldn't play there any more because the arena was too small. They felt it unfair to ask them for more revenue by asking them to stay in the smaller venue.
The City Council requested financial assistance from the province in return. The province agreed to provide $150 million towards the project, but the City Council still needed another $100 million. That was when the City decided that it would instead concentrate on building an arena downtown.

The best time to go to a Toronto Raptors match
Toronto Raptors games usually take place during the weekdays between October and April. Weekends are often reserved to attend concerts or festivals.
It is best to reserve tickets early as they are likely to sell quickly.
Wednesday is the most popular day for Toronto Raptors fans to visit. This is due to the fact that many fans arrive early in order to view pregame warmups.

The best time to visit a Toronto Raptor game is after 8 pm. The stadium is empty before midnight, but fans return to celebrate their team's win.
